What Are the Causes of Acne?

Acne, better known as a zit or pimple, is generally a non-cancerous skin infection. This condition usually appears during puberty and is mainly caused by a buildup of oils in the pores. The skin becomes irritated and inflamed and a whitehead or blackhead is formed. Acne usually occurs on the face, although it can appear on other parts of the body, including the neck, back, chest and shoulders. Acne is actually an inflammatory disease of the skin, which typically has large sebaceous glands that connect to the hair follicle and contain a thin, oily hair.

There are many ways to treat acne, including taking acne medication such as topical treatments (antibiotics), antibiotics, and Accutane. However, these medications do not always work and some people experience severe side effects such as depression, thinning hair and other problems. Other options for treating acne include herbal supplements, herbal cures, natural remedies, homeopathic treatment, alternative therapy and nutritional treatment. Some people have had success with salicylic acid and duct tape treatment.

Acne is usually caused by excessive oil production by the sebaceous glands. The oil combines with dead skin cells, bacteria and debris to form a pimple. It can be a red pimple or a whitehead. The causes of acne are not fully understood, but there is much speculation. Some believe that hormonal imbalance plays a role in some cases. Some suggest that it is caused by allergies, while others believe that it is caused by certain foods and even stress.

Acne can leave scars. Acne scars can vary from being relatively mild and easily hidden on the face, to very noticeable and embarrassing. The type of scars varies with the severity of the pimples, skin type and location of the pimples. Some people with very severe acne have little or no visible scarring. These pimples are called cysts and nodules.

Severe acne may require the services of a dermatologist. A dermatologist may prescribe oral antibiotics or provide the topical acne medication Accutane. There are different ways to treat acne. Some people have had success using home remedies and over the counter acne medications such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and duct tape.

If you suffer from severe acne that does not respond to traditional treatments, chemical peels, and conventional surgery may be an option. Some forms of acne are difficult to treat due to their advanced stages. Doctors may recommend isotretinoin, a medication used to treat severe cases of cystic acne and most cases of acne vulgaris. A patient suffering from moderate to severe acne may need to try different treatments until one that works is found.
